Stimulus Funding Will Enable Atlanta’s Municipal Market to Update, Improve Historical Structure
ATLANTA — Pamela Joiner, General Manager of the 85-year old Sweet Auburn Curb Market, today announced that J. M. Wilkerson Construction has won the bid to renovate the 50,000sf historical municipal market structure with funds issued to the City of Atlanta by the Federal Government, pursuant to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (“ARRA”) of 2009. As General Contractor, JMW will be responsible for all project management and reports required per Stimulus and HUD guidelines. Stevens & Wilkinson, an Atlanta-based Architectural, Engineering and Interior Design firm will provide design services for the JMW team. Over the last 15 years, the firms have successfully completed numerous projects together.
“Our selection committee selected JMW because of the company’s extensive experience with historic renovations,” notes Joiner. “This major renovation will increase the energy efficiency of our building, include cosmetic and structural improvements to both the interior and exterior of the Market, as well as provide much needed signage.”
All work will be performed around the market’s hours. JMW’s crews will mainly work between 6 PM and 6 AM, or on Sundays when necessary. There are no plans to close or disrupt the market’s regular hours of operation, Mondays – Saturdays from 8 AM to 6 PM.
“We are eager to get started immediately, especially on the exterior,” says Joiner. “This will have the greatest and most immediate impact on generating additional traffic to the market, benefiting all our fresh food vendors and cafés.”
Founded in 1918, the Sweet Auburn Curb market offers a wide selection of fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, cheeses, and fish. The market also stocks numerous specialty products and is home to a variety of small cafes. The market serves local businesses, in-town workers and residents, Georgia State University students and shoppers from all over the region. Open Monday through Saturday, the Sweet Auburn Curb Market is conveniently located in the heart of downtown Atlanta, and is home to the Urban Picnic, a twice-monthly event bringing food trucks and street food vendors together.
