Hotel Indigo Athens Georgia Goes for LEED GREEN GOLD

Athens, Georgia’s newest upscale, downtown hotel, Hotel Indigo, just opened in September 2009 has been constructed to meet LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Standards.

Located at 500 College Ave., Hotel Indigo is utilizing both exterior and interior materials from within a 500-mile radius . LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality.
Hotel Indigo’s Green Features:
  • An outdoor cistern collects rainwater for landscape irrigation
  • Energy-efficient heating and air-conditioning system
  • Regenerative elevators that self-power after use.
  • Sustainable site development
  • A planned dedicated green roof
  • “Green pavement” systems where possible
  • On-site public transit stop, bicycle racks, and priority parking for hybrid vehicles to encourage alternate transportation to and from the hotel.
Hotel Indigo artfully combines the amenities and consistencies of a brand hotel with the design cache and service personality of a boutique. This six-floor, 130- room upscale boutique hotel will reflect the eclectic art and music scene found in Athens. The new downtown Athens hotel also includes a 6,000 square foot meeting facility.
In lieu of a traditional hole-digging ceremony in August 2008, the developers decided to have a “greenbreaking” instead, and donated funds to support community initiatives, including Nuci’s Space and the Athens Land Trust. The developers of Hotel Indigo Athens are Rialto Property Partners, LLC, which specializes in sustainable development, bringing to market projects that meet LEED criteria and promote responsible building practices.
The hotel is keeping a blog of the Athens project, which includes construction progress, model designs, and any new information about the hotel. Visit the Hotel Indigo blog at www.hotelindigoathens.blogspot.com/
