Waffle House on Monday opened its newest location across from the Fountain of Rings at Centennial Olympic Park.
The day also just happened to be International Waffle Day (not to be confused with National Waffle Day, which falls in August on the anniversary of the first waffle iron patent).
The restaurant – dubbed “Unit 1996” in a nod to the year Atlanta hosted the Summer Olympic Games – is on Centennial Olympic Park Drive between Andrew Young International Boulevard and Luckie Street. The site is at the western end of the Atlanta Streetcar line, which will connect Centennial Olympic Park with the King Center on Auburn Avenue.
A Waffle House official said the Norcross, Ga.-based company hopes the location will be something of a downtown ‘welcome center’ for out-of-towners and locals.
Waffle House was founded in 1955. Today the privately-held company operates more than 1,650 restaurants in 25 states, and it is the world’s leading server of waffles, T-bone steaks, hash browns, cheese ‘n eggs, country ham, pork chops and grits.
