ATLANTA —
Eight hundred employees are working every day to get the new Ponce City Market ready for the public.
The $300 million redevelopment is helping to transform an entire neighborhood.
Transforming the old Sears building into Ponce City Market, construction crews were working hard Monday to finish the 2 million square feet of restaurant, retail, office and apartment space.
“We have just over 800 employees on site every day. In the next couple of months, (we) expect to get over 900 maybe even 1,000,” Jim Irwin, Jamestown’s senior vice president, said.
Channel 2 Action News was there last July when the office space was wide open. Some of the first businesses are said to be setting up shop as early as September. Also included in the market space is 259 apartments. The model is open and they are leasing for move-in, also starting in September.
“Excitement for it to open, for the boost in the economy,” resident T’Lene Hayes told Channel 2’s John Bachman.
Neighbors said they can’t wait for it to open.
“I think it’s fun to have something enclosed and just adding to the city and value of the city and our neighborhood,” resident Nandani Persaud said.
“Over a billion dollars in investments in this submarket. It’s the fastest growing submarket in the entire city in Atlanta,” said Irwin.
Developers expect to have Ponce City Market at full operation by next spring. At that point, they said with apartments, offices, shops and restaurants, they expect 10,000 people on the property at any given time.
